Plot twists – Crafting the unexpected.
One of the hardest and most satisfying tasks for an author is to create a plot twist that no reader can predict. Avid readers can identify mild twists well in advance, but an expertly crafted one catches the pros off guard!
As much as my stories are character-driven, I LOVE plot twists. In fact, my first novel, Completion, contains a doozy of a twist that flat-footed everyone. Trust me when I say, this is hard to do!
One of my writing hallmarks is combining disparate elements in a way that hasn’t been done before. How do I create believable and unexpected twists from these elements? First of all, I read a ton across all genres. Exposure to different types of stories and journeys is invaluable for a writer. I understand how the pros do it, and more importantly, figure out what hasn’t been done before.
The second step is to frame the twist within the context of the character(s) and thematic arc of the story. Every element in a book must correlate to a journey or theme for maximum impact. A twist with no connection to the characters journey is a giant WTF for the reader. In my second novel, A Rainbow Like You, the main shocker twist had a similar feel to the whammy in the brilliant film The Sixth Sense. If you watch that film multiple times you notice the crumbs that were being laid out for the viewer. I do the same in my novel. Try and figure it out!
Once I decide on the twist, the third step is to layer in the crumbs. Chapter by chapter, I leave clues and hints as to what might be coming down the pipe. A true unexpected twist is all about playing against type in a clever way. Twists often challenge the reader’s assumptions and keep them guessing about the outcome.
Here are a few examples of plot twists that can occur in a novel:
- The Hidden Identity: A character who was thought to be an ally is revealed to be the main antagonist, completely changing the dynamics of the story. This twist can create a sense of betrayal and force the protagonist to reevaluate their trust in others.
- The False Accusation: A character is wrongly accused of a crime or wrongdoing, leading the reader to believe they are guilty. However, a sudden revelation proves their innocence, exposing the true culprit and shocking both the characters and the reader.
- The Unexpected Alliance: Two characters who were previously at odds or on opposing sides suddenly join forces to achieve a common goal. This twist can bring unexpected alliances, create complex relationships, and introduce new dynamics to the story.
- The Time Jump: The story takes an unexpected leap forward or backward in time, revealing crucial information or events that were previously unknown. This twist can provide a deeper understanding of the narrative and shed light on the motivations and actions of the characters.
- The Resurrection: A character who was believed to be dead suddenly reappears, challenging the reader’s assumptions and adding a new layer of mystery to the story. This twist can create shock and disbelief, as well as raise questions about the nature of life and death within the narrative.
- The Twist Within a Twist: A plot twist that occurs after a previous twist, completely subverting the reader’s expectations. This double twist can leave the reader questioning everything they thought they knew about the story, leading to a thrilling and unpredictable conclusion.
These are just a few examples of the many plot twists that can occur in a novel. The end results of a twist should be one or more of the following: Keep the reader engaged, add depth to the narrative, and create memorable moments that leave a lasting impact. If you do it right, your readers will love you for it!
